VFA was hired to design a replacement playground for Tom Riley Park, located within the flood plain of Mimico Creek in Etobicoke. VFA staff brainstormed several fun ideas based on site conditions and historic uses of the park and worked with City staff to solicit community input. The community preferred a design concept based on the geology and landforms associated with the creek and expressed a desire for a unique playground experience. VFA introduced a large play berm with accessible path and boulders into the playground and brought Earthscape on-board to create a custom “Beaver-themed” play sculpture. Additional elements include accessible picnic areas at either end of a serpentine path, a sandbox with natural log borders, a custom aluminum shade shelter, and seat walls.
