VFA completed the landscape architectural components of this Design-Build-Finance project in Ajax, Ontario as a member of “Children First Consortium” led by Amico and Sacyr (construction) and Parkin Architects Limited. Children First was selected after a competitive selection process. Through all stages, VFA coordinated extensively with Parkin and the other design disciplines and consulted closely with staff from Grandview Kids who pressed for an exceptional building and landscape with an exuberant and whimsical character.
The landscape comprises six programmed areas: a “Therapy Trail” in the existing woodlot at the rear of the property, a Main Playground attached to the school, a “Garden Play” area offering informal play and gathering opportunities in an area next to the Main Playground, a “Sunken Garden” adjacent to the indoor therapy pool, a “Therapy Terrace” on the roof above the school offering therapeutic and amenity space for kids and families, and an “Arrival Playground” near the main entrance. These are all nestled into an extensively planted landscape of trees and pollinator gardens with ample, accessible circulation routes, rest areas, and gathering spaces.
